Main
Contractor appointed for Ceylinco Celestial Residencies
and Hyatt Regency Colombo

Colombo 19th January 2006. Ceylinco Homes International
(Lotus Tower) Ltd today announced the appointment
of M/s Maga Engineering Pvt Ltd as the main contractor
to construct Ceylinco Celestial Residencies and
the Hyatt Regency Colombo at No. 116, Galle Road
in Colombo 03, thus reaching yet another milestone
in this landmark project.
Estimated at approximately Rs. 10 billion, this
45 floor investment will be a mixed development
and will be the tallest building in Sri Lanka,
once completed. The developer is Ceylinco Homes
International (Lotus Tower) Ltd while the owning
company of Hyatt Regency Colombo is Ceylinco Leisure
Properties Ltd.
M/s Maga Engineering Pvt Ltd has been responsible
for the construction of some prestigious developments
such as the Apollo Hospital in Colombo and Ceylinco’s
flagship apartment development, the much talked
about “Barnes Place Residencies”.
The government’s foresight to have more
infrastructure development projects in partnership
with the private sector, resulted in Ceylinco
successfully bidding for this prime property through
the Urban Development Authority (UDA). The bid
made by Ceylinco Homes International (Lotus Tower)
Ltd, was selected purely on its technical and
financial merits among other bids that were made
by both local and foreign companies.
The landmark venture will primarily consist of
Ceylinco Celestial Residencies, a luxury apartment
development with 176 one to four bed roomed units
and a limited number of penthouses. “Everyone
wants to be a part of this historic development.
We have received a very positive response with
more than 60% of the apartments already reserved”,
Deputy Chairperson of the Ceylinco Homes Group,
Mrs. Padmini Karunanayake, said.
The Hyatt Regency Colombo, a 250 roomed star
class hotel will complement the development where
residents will benefit from Hyatt’s full
range of services. Among these are exceptional
meeting and fitness facilities, a range of innovative
theme and multi-cuisine restaurants, a host of
entertainment options, and most importantly, an
efficient service that will meet every whim and
fancy of the discerning clientele. All restaurants
and lobbies will be on the top floors, incorporated
into the ‘sky lobby’ concept with
fantastic views of the city and the ocean. The
hotel will essentially be a fine combination of
Sri Lankan hospitality and the global Hyatt flavour.
All approvals including those from the Colombo
Municipal Council (CMC), the Coast Conservation
Department (CCD), the Ministry of Defence (MOD)
etc, have been obtained. The relevant authorities
concerned have been very co-operative right throughout
while scrutinizing documents and matters related
to approvals etc. The building, once taken shape,
will indeed be the pride of the nation as most
of the work associated with the designing, construction
and allied services are being carried out by Sri
Lankan companies.
“This will be a monument for Sri Lanka.
Our intention is to encourage and develop local
talent and thereby give an opportunity to many
Sri Lankans to be associated with this project,
as they have the knowledge, expertise and all
it takes to match world class construction. This
will also stimulate the economy, as well as generate
direct and indirect employment opportunities”,
Deshamanya Dr. Lalith Kotelawala said.
To design this building, Ceylinco Homes International
(Lotus Tower) Ltd invited Design Consortium Ltd
which has been responsible for many landmark buildings
in the city of Colombo. M/s Nawaloka Construction
Company Ltd which was awarded the piling contract
is using new piling technology and has mobilised
machinery in keeping with international piling
requirements and standards. Progress is well on
schedule.
This entire project has been inspired by the
vision of the Chairman of Ceylinco Consolidated,
Deshamanya Dr. Lalith Kotelawala to build the
tallest building in Sri Lanka. He has, in turn,
drawn inspiration from his father, the late Senator
Justin Kotelawala, who built ‘Ceylinco House’,
Sri Lanka’s tallest building during that
time. Since then the Ceylinco Group has spearheaded
the construction of several ambitious projects
across the country. Ceylinco Celestial Residencies
and the Hyatt Regency Colombo are considered the
‘jewel in the crown’ and will dramatically
rise above Colombo’s changing skyline. This
landmark mixed development project will undoubtedly
ensure that Sri Lanka’s tourism and hospitality
sectors get a vital image boost throughout the
world.
